Cambridge plays the blues

Tunes in Cambridge

A while back a friend of mine Andrew Mogridge met up with some old-timers in Cambridge Location, East London. The old gents don't have much but they have music in their blood . Andrew set up several recording sessions in a kitchen of a township house and recorded what they had to play.

The result is an amazing collection of music you will hear nowhere else. Now he has posted all the tunes, video and still photography from those sessions for free download on his site.

Check it out here and you will discover the magic that lies down the dusty roads and between the shacks of the Eastern Cape, a richness of creativity which mocks the poverty of our region.

  1. Thank you so much! I’ve recently discovered a local artist called Zwee – please excuse the spelling. The Eastern Cape is such a rich, diverse province.

I find it an unbelievably positive thing that such talent thrives, despite the prevailing conditions. It gives one hope.

  2. I’ve now downloaded the album…and it’s great. Thank you Mr Mogridge for making it possible for our local talent to garner some ‘publicity’.

  3. Careful Kelly, the one track is called Jesu Lament – I would hate for you to be converted to Christianity against your will – especially if the song has Christian hypnotic affects on mere mortals like you.

  4. Dear Woof, I can only assume that you have issues with my atheism. If that’s the case, perhaps you’d like to raise them on the appropriate blog. My lack of ‘belief’ does not affect my appreciation of good music. And that is what this is.

  5. OK Kelly – you got me there – good music it is – just wanted to warn you about the possibly disturbing lyrics…

  6. I have issues with any spirit or any one that will not willingly acknowledge that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, that he died on a Cross and that God raised Him from the dead three days later.

  7. Woof, your concern is touching.

Joe, that’s alright. I have issues with people who believe in the death penalty. We must all suffer our fellow human beings as best we can.

  8. Jesus said: “Suffer little children to come unto me; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” …

  9. I can’t seem to get way from the Jesus nuts. Will someone please explain, Woof perhaps, how a musical offering turns into a sacrificial lamb – suffer little children indeed.

  10. Hello Andrew – welcome to the “Brazil – where the nuts come from” …

You see it all started when Kelly and I got bored with the day and decided to waste bandwidth and energy blogging. Now I am not sure why we got entangled in this soirĂ©e but it beats the hell out of working. This blog spot fell victim when on another blog Kelly took on Abongile and a few others on a religious matter and I felt as she said she did not want her child influenced unduly by Christianinty, that I should warn her that one of the songs you feature on your website of the honourable gentleman who’s music you are so kindly making available for download, is called Jesu Lament and basically, I was looking out for her atheistic endeavours.

Sorry to have spoilt the essence of your blog spot with our fruits and nuts.

Music sounds good though. WOuld love to hear it done professionally. But then raw is best – just like nuts; although I do have penchant for roasted nut; and I guess I will be totally planted!

  11. A peanut sat on a railroad track, his heart was all a flutter
    Along came a train, the 10:15 —–
    choof! choof! Peanut Butter!

  12. Dear blog friends…. might I suggest that we comment here on the music of our friends from Cambridge. There is another forum for the other “evolving” debate :)

  13. LOL! Okie Dokie, Mr Deputy-Editor! I even showed the link to everyone in my office! Is it on Facebook yet? Youtube?

  14. Andrews (M & T) thanks for sharing these stunning videos and music. The creativity and talent that we have just on our doorstop is amazing. We all need to do more to get exposure and opportunities for township and rural artists, as the government is not doing enough.
