Fur for thought and my carbon footprint
Now, here's some food for thought. Or should that be fur for thought?
Check out this fascinating area chart by New Scientist which measures the carbon footprint of our favourite pets. Click on the image here to view their amazing findings
As you will see from the graph, a large dog has an eco-footprint of 1.1 hectacres,a medium size dog a footprint of .84 hectacres. A Toyota Landcruiser on the other hand has a carbon footprint of only 0.41 hectacres.
Well, that's all the justification I need. The next time my daughter asked for a puppy, I'm telling her we're getting a new SUV - because it's better for the environment!
As I was reading this I was wondering what my household's own carbon footprint would be. I found this calculator on Whatsmycarbonfootprint.com and did some very rough calculations.
The horrifying result appeared to be that my family emits a carbon footprint of 23.2 tonnes a year! Now that's a shocker. I'm definitely shooting the dogs and buying a Landcruiser.
