Andrew Trench notes from the revolution

Jingle hell, jingle hell…

Hands up all of you who promised to do gift shopping before the Christmas rush. Now, hands up, all those who kept the promise.
I thought so. Tsk, tsk. Why do we never learn?
Now let me rub my crystal ball and see where you will be for the next three Saturdays.
Perhaps fighting with the parking ticket machine at Vincent Park? Sitting in the traffic jam at Retail Park? Rushing into Spar at the last moment to get a box of choccies for the relative you forgot?
If you’re anything like me, this year will be like last year – an bruising last-minute shopping scrum that flattens your Christmas spirit.

Monster from the deep

Octopus on river bank at Gonubie

Look at what I found lying on the Gonubie River bank during a walk in the early morning this weekend. This thing was pretty big, about a metre or so across. I'd be interested if anyone knew what kind of octopus it is and if they are commonly found near rivers.

It's amazing what you can find lying on the beach. On other occasions I have found a large ray, perfectly intact but dead, and also three little sharks, with an amazing leopard-type skin, which appeared to have been washed up by a  large wave.

One was still alive and I managed to drag it back into the ocean and it seemed to swim away.

Talk about a close shave!

We carried an amazing survival story today of how a surfer managed to escape from an attack by what is thought to be a Great White at Bonza Bay. You can read the full story on our site. Surfer survives Jaws attack
It's quite incredible when you look at the picture of his board that was munched that he survived (he did receive a large bite to the top of his leg). And to think I was just talking the other day about trading in my kayak and old short board for a nice mini-mall to start having some fun in the waves again... I'm thinking twice about it now.
Check out this pic below which we did not publish in today's paper.

Cambridge plays the blues

Tunes in Cambridge

A while back a friend of mine Andrew Mogridge met up with some old-timers in Cambridge Location, East London. The old gents don't have much but they have music in their blood . Andrew set up several recording sessions in a kitchen of a township house and recorded what they had to play.

The result is an amazing collection of music you will hear nowhere else. Now he has posted all the tunes, video and still photography from those sessions for free download on his site.

Check it out here and you will discover the magic that lies down the dusty roads and between the shacks of the Eastern Cape, a richness of creativity which mocks the poverty of our region.
